re:artistic practice, tape club tasters, May shows
hi harpies,
yes I know it is technically May, but can we please just gaze at this FAB FAB FAB art from April's ep by Toronto-based artist Diana Fernandes!!!

UPCOMING SHOWS
Ambient Afternoon Sunday May 25 from 3-9pm $10
Join me alongside 11 other Toronto ambient artists as we celebrate the Drone Day afterglow in this very relaxed Sunday set.
I'll be playing a solo electric harp set around 5:30pm.
BAD CABARET Friday, May 30 at 8:30pm $20.50, DM @badmachine for PWYC
I will be attempting to play the electric harp with my teeth, among other audio experiments for this spectacular one-of-a-kind and one-time only cabaret s p e c t a c u l a r.
Am fully planning on exploring my least ambient/mainstream ideas, so come hungry for le experimental, I will be serving.
january-may in moods
I started 2025 with the goal of challenging myself to work on + release more music - which seems like a 'yea, duh you're a musician, isn't that what you're supposed to do?' kinda thing to say.
What I mean is, even though my own practice has strayed from strict improvisation to this structured-improv-composition-amoeba, I still kinda fall back on doing something once, recording it, and never touching it again, which really leans into improvisation's you-had-to-be-there sense of impermanence.
(which if I was honest, is probably that classic musician's
"it's just not GOOD enough" that I find easy to hide behind)
Anyways, in an effort to move from 'there, but not QUITE finished' musical limbo to 'wow, a new album - maybe?', I started a digital tape club - releasing demos, archives, and experiments every month on Bandcamp (+ mailing cassettes too).
It's been fun so far putting these lil' EP's together, and also very helpful in keeping myself on track to actually put together something concrete and intentional. There's nothing like a deadline to help clarify what's release-able, unusable, or needs further tweaking.
Thus I wanted to share a lil retrospective so: here's a choco-box of snippets from the past few months.

SOME RECOMMENDATIONS
title taken from Magdalena Bay's Hysterical Us.
NEW JUSTIN OROK ALBUM!!! also watch Little Library - Justin walked for eight hours so you can watch this for ~4 minutes
I've probably watched this x20 by now, but can't get over how impeccable this live performance by oklou is - like, excuse ME, ice skaters?!?!?!?!
stay tuned for next month where I tell you how to get in touch with the ~universe~ (or more likely an elongated rant on how much I love toronto)
